A sneak peek of art in progress from contributing artist Ophelia Chong.
“Artists from around the country have come together again to contribute to the second annual Ucal McKenzie Breakaway Foundation 2011 Poster Calendar. Collaborators include GOOD Magazine, IDEO, Bruce Mau Design, Luba Lukova, Chaz Maviyane-Davies, Lorraine Wild’s Green Dragon Studio, Chris Pullman, Paul Goodnight, Ophelia Chong, Jim Marcus, Christopher Simmons, and students from Newton North High School.
The poster calendars will be ready early this year — in late spring — to help celebrate the World Cup in South Africa, and will appear at MoMA Design Stores in New York City, The New Museum in New York City, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, at the World Cup Boston events and on our Breakaway Foundation website. Proceeds will go to help fund the UMBF youth soccer and health clinics this summer in Boston.”
Thank you Suzanne McKenzie for allowing me the honor to work on this project with you. – Ophelia Chong

Inspired by the challenge of hands-on tweaks and unpredictable results as well as the tactile qualities of different inks, papers, and binding techniques, today’s creatives are rediscovering old-fashioned printing methods and crafts. Impressive is a topical exploration of the interplay between current trends in graphic design and traditional handiwork such as letterpress printing, hand-cut linotype, chiselled woodblocks, and embossing. In addition to a rich selection of invitations, business cards, stationery, posters, and other material printed by hand, it offers personal insights from designers who are usingold-fashioned techniques to create cutting-edge work.

Word Play explores the human fascination with printed language. This diverse collection of artists, designers and craftspeople traverse the boundaries between the semantic and syntactic, using words as a conceptual and aesthetic force. This traveling exhibition—with stops in Detroit and Richmond—brings the work of internationally recognized designers and artists, such as Ed Fella and Kurnal Rawat, together with Boston-area artists. Word Play includes four installations specifically designed for the Fort Point space that engage text and language. From the experimental and unconventional to the traditional methods of Gutenberg, the artists in this exhibition playfully and poetically mark the proverbial page with words that both provoke and evoke.
