A Common Thread

on KCET

A thread is made from many strands, each strand strengthens the other, with time it will fray and eventually break, but if you continue to add to that thread, it will last for an eternity.

Juan Devis’s series Departures explores the waves of Chinese immigration to Los Angeles, my grandfather was part of the first wave immigrating to my home country Canada. His story is similar to the stories of Chinese immigrants to North America, the loneliness, the racism, the search for identity in a country that didn’t understand them and the gratitude for the chance to make a better life for themselves and their families  MORE>

Inspired by the challenge of hands-on tweaks and unpredictable results as well as the tactile qualities of different inks, papers, and binding techniques, today’s creatives are rediscovering old-fashioned printing methods and crafts. Impressive is a topical exploration of the interplay between current trends in graphic design and traditional handiwork such as letterpress printing, hand-cut linotype, chiselled woodblocks, and embossing. In addition to a rich selection of invitations, business cards, stationery, posters, and other material printed by hand, it offers personal insights from designers who are usingold-fashioned techniques to create cutting-edge work.

Word Play explores the human fascination with printed language. This diverse collection of artists, designers and craftspeople traverse the boundaries between the semantic and syntactic, using words as a conceptual and aesthetic force. This traveling exhibition—with stops in Detroit and Richmond—brings the work of internationally recognized designers and artists, such as Ed Fella and Kurnal Rawat, together with Boston-area artists. Word Play includes four installations specifically designed for the Fort Point space that engage text and language. From the experimental and unconventional to the traditional methods of Gutenberg, the artists in this exhibition playfully and poetically mark the proverbial page with words that both provoke and evoke.
