Inspired by the challenge of hands-on tweaks and unpredictable results as well as the tactile qualities of different inks, papers, and binding techniques, today’s creatives are rediscovering old-fashioned printing methods and crafts. Impressive is a topical exploration of the interplay between current trends in graphic design and traditional handiwork such as letterpress printing, hand-cut linotype, chiselled woodblocks, and embossing. In addition to a rich selection of invitations, business cards, stationery, posters, and other material printed by hand, it offers personal insights from designers who are usingold-fashioned techniques to create cutting-edge work.

Word Play explores the human fascination with printed language. This diverse collection of artists, designers and craftspeople traverse the boundaries between the semantic and syntactic, using words as a conceptual and aesthetic force. This traveling exhibition—with stops in Detroit and Richmond—brings the work of internationally recognized designers and artists, such as Ed Fella and Kurnal Rawat, together with Boston-area artists. Word Play includes four installations specifically designed for the Fort Point space that engage text and language. From the experimental and unconventional to the traditional methods of Gutenberg, the artists in this exhibition playfully and poetically mark the proverbial page with words that both provoke and evoke.

Wowowee! I got my copies of CSS Artistry by Andy Clarke today from Peachpit. Andy asked me to collaborate on the design of the box and the DVD. I submitted letterpress work I did.
What an honor to work with Andy Clarke and Charlene Will of Peachpit Press.
My latest project.
Concept:
The Gutenberg Press (1439) pushed ink into paper using a press and wood block type, becoming the first mass communication tool; now the
internet has superseded that by the use of digital communication. For A Beautiful Web combines two mediums to show the beauty in
both hand and digital work. This is a collaboration by Andy Clarke (digital) and Ophelia Chong (letterpress), who found each other
on the internet through Flickr.

A series of ephemera and Wood Type Letterpress. Hand done with care and love.
I am so tired. It has been a long week. Most of it has been exhilarating, one small part disappointment. And we move forward. Next week is E3 and the site’s debut at the conference. Now I need some rest to prepare.
Good Night from Los Feliz, CA.

From Flowers for Algernon : “intelligence that hasn’t been tempered by human affection isn’t worth a damn”. This could be said about what works and doesn’t work on the internet. A website that has no emotional connection to the user is worthless.

I finished “Flowers for Algernon”, last night at 3 am. A diary of a man with an IQ of 70 who undergoes an experiment to increase his intelligence. What happens is that his IQ is increased to near 200, but without the emotionally stability required. His parallel guinea pig, “Algernon” is a white mouse. Algernon was the first to be experimented on, with Charley following soon after. Algernon slowly looses his super intelligence and soon displays anti-social behaviors and amnesia, which Charley soon displays and but with the understanding that he is seeing his future taking place in Algernon.
