Inspired by the challenge of hands-on tweaks and unpredictable results as well as the tactile qualities of different inks, papers, and binding techniques, today’s creatives are rediscovering old-fashioned printing methods and crafts. Impressive is a topical exploration of the interplay between current trends in graphic design and traditional handiwork such as letterpress printing, hand-cut linotype, chiselled woodblocks, and embossing. In addition to a rich selection of invitations, business cards, stationery, posters, and other material printed by hand, it offers personal insights from designers who are usingold-fashioned techniques to create cutting-edge work.

Word Play explores the human fascination with printed language. This diverse collection of artists, designers and craftspeople traverse the boundaries between the semantic and syntactic, using words as a conceptual and aesthetic force. This traveling exhibition—with stops in Detroit and Richmond—brings the work of internationally recognized designers and artists, such as Ed Fella and Kurnal Rawat, together with Boston-area artists. Word Play includes four installations specifically designed for the Fort Point space that engage text and language. From the experimental and unconventional to the traditional methods of Gutenberg, the artists in this exhibition playfully and poetically mark the proverbial page with words that both provoke and evoke.

The Crossing

Part 1

The valley below sat between two mountains, like the cleave between two perfect breasts. Running through the valley was a river that sparkled and glinted from the slowly setting sun, a golden necklace that traced the gentle curves of the river banks.

He thought he had better find shelter soon, before the moons came up and the wilderbeasts started to roam.

The rocks held steady under his feet, he held onto branches on his descent. The trees were his allies. Leaves clung to him like a new coat, small burrs covered his boots, nature’s buttons.

The smell of wet rocks swept him up in such joy, the sound of the water rushing over the fallen trees created a slow orchestra of sounds that a lover could whisper, but could never bring the promise of such bliss as true as this.

The old tree bent down and carried him up into the highest branches, and cradled him. Leaves swallowed him up. As he laid in her arms, he looked up at the double moon. A star swung past dropping seeds that sprouted up into glowing diamond flowers below his feet.

As he fell asleep, his last thought was how he had to protect the valley as much as it protected him.

On the other side of the valley, a small movement turned into a loud crawl. Something was waiting for the daybreak, saving its energy for the next adventure with the Man.

to be continued.

Hold Tight

i had the most vivid dream this morning.
I was time traveling back to germany 1933. my boyfriend
was a nazi lieutenant and we were going to travel by train.
he showed me the route by tracing his finger across Germany.
i kept thinking that i should keep the map because it
is going to change very soon.
The house we were in was old, and even then i knew
it was going to be blown apart by the allies in a few years.
he told me to stand by the gate because he wanted a photo
of me, he directed my pose and even then it was one of
those 1930’s poses with one leg in front of the other.
I stood there playing with the bangles he had given me,
cream and gem colored rings of plastic.
The next morning, i walked into the bathroom and it
was painted blood red, as i walked in i stepped onto
little bright green lizards which left green marks all over my feet.
As i was bathing,  i knew that the world was about to change.
I woke up the soldier, he was naked and asleep with a book
over his face, and told him it was time to go. I looked at the
bedspread and it was the one i have on my bed now,
i knew then that “my home will be gone soon”
and that i needed to pack my jewelery.
When i woke up i knew that my World was about to change.

Cutters Show at the Cinders Gallery

Cinders Gallery Presents:

Cutters: An Exhibition of International Collage

October 16th – November 15th 2009

Opening Reception Friday October 16th, 7-10pm

Curated by James Gallagher

Cutters showcases a variety of contemporary collage from North America and
Europe. The selected artists range from young google-image searchers to
collage veterans with roots in the 70s punk scene. Each one has a unique
vision and exciting visual vocabulary that includes collections of images
sorted and stacked, layered and glued, cut to pieces and ripped apart.

In our current age of vast visual stimuli, images and information are
swirling all around us at a faster pace than ever before. We process what we
can, latch on to fragments, and quickly move on. As we get used to
everything being remixed, edited, mashed up and shuffled around, these
collage artists freeze that frenzy and bring you in for a closer look at the
hand at work.

In this diverse collection you will find….Ophelia Chong’s quiet moments,
Kareem Rizk’s weathered nostalgia, Max-O-Matic’s controlled chaos, Joe
Ryckebosch’s memory screens, Vanessa Lamounier’s stunning erotica, James
Gallagher’s unseen stages, and Jason Glasser’s visual soul (on glass).
Sophie Kern creates magical worlds (where goddesses, witches and
sorceresses rule all!), Bill Zindel attempts to make sense of stacks of
paper he has amassed, while Valero Doval combines vintage imagery with
delicate handwork.

With over 40 artists contributing close to 150 works of various sizes,
shapes, and colors, the gallery will be transformed into one giant
assemblage, glue stains and all.
